Digipack Ideas- What To Include

Our Digipack will contain:

A front cover, my idea for the front cover is having the band be walking down a long road, I got this from the name of the album 'A Long Walk Home'.
A back cover, this should have the track listing of the album, barcode, copyright and legal information, production company and website.
A spine, on the spine I vision there to be the name of the artist, and the name of the album, and also the barcode number.
An Inlay, on the inlay there should be pictures of the band, the tracks and lyrics.
Reviews, we may have reviews on the front cover.

There are also bonus material we need to think about including, such as:

Postage orders, available updates and questionnaires these can also all be included on a mailing list. Also online and offline images as well as visual art.

Music Video Camera Angles

Music videos normal include and switch between: Extreme Close Up (ECU) this is used to clearly show something specific, we would most likely use it to show hands playing an instrument, or on the mouth singing. Close Up (CU) this will be used to show the face as it shows singing, and if used in a narrative it helps set the mood and show emotion. Medium Shot (MS) is used to clearly show the body of the artist, and is useful for showing performance. Long Shot (LS) this allows the audience to see everything, and is useful to break up the Close Ups which may become boring for the audience. Low Angle (LA) these are used to show power and authority, this will be useful in certain parts of our video. High Angle (HA) this is used to show low authority and weakness, this will like Low Angles, be useful to use in certain parts of the video.

Digipack Ideas- Production Company/Copyright Information

The details of the production company are also important to include, these are usually the logo of the company and therefore can be anything, a well known example is Universal Music Group:

The copyright information is always shown on a digipack, therefore it is an important thing to include in our digipack, this is an example of what it may look like:

Digipack Ideas- Barcode

For our Digipack, it is essential to include a front and back cover, as well as in inlay, but it is also important to include things like a bar code:

This is a normal bar code, and it is going to be located on the back of the digipack.

Another thing to think about including is a blackberry bar code, which is starting to be used more and more

Final Cut Express Effects- Split Screening

We think a useful thing to include in our video is the use of a split screen, I found a tutorial on YouTube that showed me how to do this properly:

Final Cut Express Effects- Black and White

For our video we have been thinking about using black and white, for either the narrative or performance, we think this will help the audience identify with what it going on a when in the storyline of the video. I looked on YouTube and found a tutorial that shows us how to make it black and white:

Practise shots

These are the practise shots we took of the hall and piano in which we will be using for our master shot

Prop list

We made a prop check-list to help organise us and to make sure when we went filming we did not forget anything, as this would hinder out filming greatly especially as we are working with a limited time in which we have to film the video

Storyboard

We created a storyboard which works in coalition with our timeline to give us a bigger understanding of how the music video is going to come together, and to help us organise what we need to film, and where we need to film it.

Shows the main character at the piano, an over the shoulder shot- close up emphasises the artists piano skills.

This scene brings in another main character, it shows a lady running out of a hall, it sets the scene, the running is in time with the beat of the music.

In this scene we are going to use a similar effect to Amy Whinehouse's video 'Rehab', as we are going blend the band into the background of scenes, here the band member is just in the back ground playing the guitar.

We are going to feature flashbacks in our video, this flashback coincides with the lyrics.

This scene features the woman again, she plays with the audiences mind as they don't really know why she is important.

This scene shows another random band member, this time there is a drummer performing in a field.

This scene shows the main character walking past a busker in the street, the busker plays in time with the music.

Woman bursts into the hall where the main character was playing the piano, tension created.

Final shot shows the woman confused as she looks for the main character, but fails to find him.

Video Timeline

We created a timeline to organise us and help us order the scenes that are going into our video. This will make it easier for us when we start to film as we will know what we need to film and where it is going to fit in in the video, it is quite vague but we can build on it with the use of a storyboard.

Lyrics

These images are of the annotated lyrics of our song, they are annotated with the ideas of scenes we are aiming have with the lyrics, this helps us get an idea of how the video is going to come together, and helps us the the timing of each scene in post production.

Location Ideas

A location idea for the master shot is in a empty hall with only a piano in the centre of it. I think this would be a good location as it will show the artists musical ability while also portraying a sense of loneliness which is pivotal for our video as the songs has elements of loneliness and abandonment in it.

Another location idea is a small room in which there is a guitar and an amp, where a band member can be practising, this again shows his ability to play an instrument, and it is a common place in which to find someone with a guitar.

The third location idea we have is a field where a drummer is playing, once again showing musical talent and ability, it is also an interesting scene for the audience to watch.

The final location idea we have is a street where the final member of the band is dressed as a busking guitarist, it shows ability to play music and it is once again a normal place to see someone playing guitar so the audience will be able to relate.

Hybrid Genre

Hybrid Genre:
Rock Rap

Linkin Park's album "hybrid Theory" mixes primarily the two music genres of Rock and Rap. The album uses Rock to fill in the gaps which traditional Rap songs have, while using Rap to employ more unique beats and allowing for more complicated lyrics.

You usually find the traditional instruments of rock such as guitars, bass guitars and drums, also used are elements of rap such as DJ's, scratch pads and electronic sampling equipment. Vocals are either sung or rapped.

Rock Rap shares many similarities to rap and hip-hop such as the use of rhyme and the beat. Drums are used to keep the rock part consistent as well as allowing for an aggressive song to be sung or rapped. However drums do not normally accompany rap which is more to do with on the beat measuring.  It is also a popular practice to switch between sung portions of the song to spoken sections and back (i.e. chorus and verses sung but the bridge is rapped).

Subgenre

Subgenres are sub categories of a larger genre. the genre we have chosen to do is Indie rock, which it's self is a Subgenre of Alternative rock, the genre takes both influence from the Indie genre and the Rock genre.

Digipack Analysis- Damien Rice O

Front
The front of the Digipack is mostly plain, not unusual of an Indie genre, the text is the name of the artist 'Damien Rice' and the album name 'O' the font is distinctive, it looks like it has been coloured in which along with the child's drawing at the bottom on the Digipack gives it the impression of 'do it yourself' the look and feel of it has been done to make the audience feel more connected as it looks as if the artist has don it himself, rather than it being mass produced. the sticker in the bottom left is reviews, this also gives it the 'home made' look as it is just a sticker that has been stuck on in seemingly no particular way.

Back
The back is also mainly plain, the text is of the track listing, and it keeps a similar distinctive font that it has on the front. There is again a drawing which is in keeping with the fronts 'do it yourself' look. There is also the copyright and legal information along with he artist website in to bottom left corner, in the bottom right corner there is the record label and bar code.

Spine/Inside
The spine of the Digipack shows the artist name and album name as it did on the front, and also the bar code number. The inside of the Digipack is completely plain as the disc and inlay are located in separate compartments.

Compartments
The compartments hold the disc, inlay and special offers card,
they are located on both sides of the Digipack.

Disc
The disc is the same as the front, except it also has the copyright and bar code information on it.

Inlay
The inlay is quite arty and in this way it helps to represent the artist. it also has the name of each song and the lyrics

For example this song is called 'Volcano' and the lyrics are sprawled across the top of the page.

Mailing list
This is the mailing list that comes with the Digipack, if you sign up with it, it gives you priority information about releases, live dates and competitions etc..
